Behind the Tutorial......                Vol 4

Welcome to the newsletter that brings you interviews with PSP tutorial writers, articles and odds and ends relating to Paint Shop Pro, and a little from the world around us. .Thanks for taking the time to stop by:).

Interview - this week's Interview is with Nancy from ChooChoo's World, and I decided to let her words speak for themselves without the questions:)

I have been married for 5 years to my second husband, we met in the VA hospital, we were both in on extended stays.  I have two sons from my first marriage, Daniel who's 19 and just met his first life goal of joining the Navy, and Paul who's 16 and seems to be the heart throb of our mobile home park...ut oh.  Both my husband and ex-husband's name is Tom, some say I did it on purpose, that I have a bad memory.  We have just moved into our brand new 2000 Fleetwood Single Wide Mobile Home, which is the subject of one tutorial I wrote.

My first computer was an Adam, it ran on cassettes and took forever to load.  I had to learn to write the programs for it also.

In April of this year, I wanted a web set in silver for my sister, and I asked a girlfriend if she could help, she said, not with silver, I then asked her what software was she using.  She told me PSP.  I went and sought it out.  I was hoping that within 30 days I could learn how to make a web set for my sister.  Then another girlfriend of mine introduced me to graphics groups when she heard I had downloaded PSP and well I still owe my sister that web set....lol

My first tutorial was born June 15th, 2001 when I did a set of Wind chimes and sent it into my graphics group.  My Friend Ronni said why don't you write a tutorial for them.  I really tried to get out of it...LOL.  I didn't have an editor, didn't want to use an online one, didn't know how to do screen shots.  After about 5 emails all the excuses were taken away :)  I thought that this One tutorial was a One Hit Wonder.

Then I was looking for projects that my son might enjoy and I noticed a very big lacking.  I love trains, thus the series of trains was born.  Right now 11 of my 25 tutorials are related to trains, and 4 others are sports related.  I got the love of trains from my father.  My living room is decorated with engines.

I have a set of likes and dislikes when it comes to tutorials, I like to see what I am going to make, right up front.  I like my supplies or downloads clearly stated.  I like my settings clear, I like to be shown examples along the way.  I like my color numbers to be typed out so I can copy and paste them into my PSP.

I have a pet peeve and I have set standards for myself, I dislike using the words "Go To" I try and use the words Apply and Load and describe the process and then give the path, when writing a tutorial.

When I was getting ready to write my second tutorial, there were several other new writers in my graphics group, and I asked them if they would be interested in forming another group where we could learn "how to" when it came to tutorial writing.

A place where we could ask questions and get answers.  I then asked some of the more seasoned writers that I admired to join with us and on the third of July 2001, we formed a group call "I Have A Q about Tut Writing" with a total of 8 members.

We have a place where we can ask our questions, I still have Questions. I now keep my eyes open for people who state that they would like to or have written their first tutorial. So I/We can return what was/is given to us so freely by the more seasoned writers. I have notified my graphic group leaders that I am doing this.

Everything about PSP fascinates me.  I love it all and want to learn more, and the minute I understand a function, I try and pass that on in a tutorial.

If you visit ChooChoo's World you will find an area called My PSP7 Learning Curve.  It has the first image I did with a tutorial, and I update it once a month adding what I am doing now.  I am hoping to fit my first year of PSP up there, my goal is to encourage others to go ahead and make mistakes.  Gee nothing could be as bad as those first images of mine, and you can see progress as you view the dates and images.

I have 6 major medical problems, and PSP has given me something to look forward to, and a group of friends like I would have never imagined in my life.  I have tried to stay positive and above my problems before PSP, but the joy and beauty of what I see coming across my screen in my Graphic Groups makes my day oh so much easier, and my life so much more happier.

The fulfillment of seeing what others can do with one of my tutorials will forever keep me in awe.  What I am able to accomplish doing other tutorials is even more amazing as I can't even draw a decent stick person.

This month I started a group for tutorial writers so they could announce their releases of tutorials.  It's no organized Group, Each Tutorial Writer makes their own Announcements and Maintains their own website.  What it does is make it convenient on my fellow PSPer's less subscriptions to apply for in the end.  I hope this concept works :)

So there you have it something for every month just about since I got my PSP.  What did I do in the month of May, LOL... I learn what da buttons were for....hehe.

Since I had this conversation with Nancy, her son Daniel, who recently joined the Navy has been deployed, as part of the American resolve to find those responsible for the WTC bombing.  She asks that you visit her memorial page and "see the picture of my oldest son, his youthful face and to think of all our children in the military and pray for them."  You may visit her memorial page here:

Last night I dreamed of the time I fell asleep when he was suppose to be taking his afternoon nap when he was three years old.  I remember waking up and going out to the kitchen, he had made "macaroni sandwiches" he had just opened up the box and placed the hard raw noodles in between the bread with margarine on it and had sprinkled the powder cheese on top.   I could see everything just as clearly as the day it happened.

He has just got out of his schools and has a whole 30 day of experience other then training. It's a whole bunch of mixed feelings, I keep singing Lee Greenwood's song, God Bless the USA, I would give anything to be at my son's side.

Prestigious Dames

Prestigious Dames is not just a group of women that write tutorials, but more of a concept, an ideal that was born June 2001. I was looking for a place to host my tutorials and talking to Kitten from Kitten's Korner, I told her my ideals on what I wanted and the way I would like to see things done. She and I shared the same ideals, thus Prestigious Dames was born.

The concept of what we wanted was a simple one. We did not have the need to be the biggest (for that is not always the best), We did not have to be the best, there are many many wonderful tutorial authors on the net. We did not have to produce the most, for we have jobs, families, graphics lists and a real life to tend to. We wanted to share of ourselves, and our talents, yet have no pressure to produce tutorials as in assembly line. We wanted to have some fun too!!

Shortly after we opened the Prestigious Dames domain. We heard from Ronni from Ronni's Originals. She was moving her tutorials yet again due to server problems. Kitten and I talked about it and we both fully agreed Ronni was one Prestigious Dame!! We shared our ideals on what we wanted from Prestigious Dames and were thrilled that she agreed that we were what she wanted too! We could not have been happier to add Ronni as a Co Owner of Prestigious Dames.

Nothing is done at the Prestigious Dames without the consent of all the owners of the domain. So when the idea of a Halloween contest came about each person had to agree and submit comments about the contest and how it should be run. We had many contestants, the images were so hard to pick from!! But as in all contests we had to choose a winner. And First Place was Awarded to Ally (Ally is working on getting her homepage up and we will keep ya posted on that)!
You can see her entry on our Halloween pages here...

In the middle of the Halloween contest. We discovered Char :) From madebychar. Again the Prestigious Dames talked it over and since Char was using a free server and her work was outstanding! We all agreed that Char was most certainly a Prestigious Dame! Again we were thrilled to have yet another owner of Prestigious Dames!

September 11, 2001
A day that changed all of our lives forever! We had talked about putting up a Memorial image on our site. NO that was not enough for all the lives that had been changed forever! We all talked it over and chose to shut down our index page to the Prestigious Dames. We knew full well that by doing so we could face adverse reaction. It filled our hearts with joy, at the outstanding show of support we received! Memorial images poured in!! People saying could you please add this one for me to the pages?! Words of encouragement were plentiful too! One Member even said "I expected nothing less from the Prestigious Dames". We knew we had made the right choice.

Our pages all remained within the domain. Direct links still worked. One short week of having our pages down, could never compare to the lifetime of sorrow some people had to face this week!!

A cry for Patriotic backgrounds came to the Prestigious Dames. We heard the cry and put up 10 pages of backgrounds for our Prestigious Members to use or pass the link if they so desired. We asked for NO link back. It was our gift to the Prestigious Members. We even had a few members offer to supply us with some backgrounds too!! WOW!! We thought it was the  least we could do for people that support us and keep us going!!

An ocean, or land may separate our bodies, but PSP bonds us in our hearts!
Be on the watch out for upcoming events and Happenings at the Prestigious Dames! You never know what we will come up with next! Things never before seen on a Tutorial update list! Fun, excitement and ppsssttt Prestigious too!

We would like to Thank Connie for the opportunity to be a part of Behind the Tutorials. We look forward to many more tutorial authors being interviewed in the upcoming months!!

Next week's interview will be with Bonnie, of  Hayler's Heavenly Creations.  I think everyone has done at least one of her tutorials.  Clear, concise, easy to follow and stunning results, meet the lady behind them.

From the Mailbox

It has come to my attention that the Arlington County Volunteer Fire Fighters and EMS personnel were thrown into the streets today  -- September 18, 2001.
Apparently, it did not matter to Fire Chief Edward P. Plaugher, or County Manager Jay Fisette, that they still had exhausted members working at the Pentagon disaster.   These "heroes and heroines" were evicted from their volunteer office on Hudson Street, in Arlington, Virginia.

These are the same volunteers that left their places of employment, on
September 11, 2001 when the terrorists attacked the Pentagon, (located in Arlington, VA).  These are the same volunteers that have given freely of  their time, doing whatever task has been required at the time.  These people are exhausted volunteers that are currently serving their county in the capacity of lifesavers, doing a job that, by any description, is beyond comprehension or belief.  They have worked tirelessly along side the "paid" career personnel, doing what needed to be done.

Arlington could not have handled the incident at the Pentagon without the volunteers.  Volunteers came from Arlington, Fairfax, and all over Virginia and Maryland.  They were willing to risk their own lives to save others.  They did any duty assigned.

Arlington paged ALL fire department personnel to meet at Station One, the morning of the incident.  They all answered the page!  Career, volunteer, didn't matter - this was a matter of patriotism.  Assignments were made.  The volunteers and the career personnel worked side by side at the Pentagon, put additional units in service to man all the county stations and STILL answered all 911 calls.

It does not matter how hard the volunteers have worked.  It does not matter that they are exhausted, and are STILL working the Pentagon incident.  They were notified today around 3 PM, one week later from the horrendous assault on our country, that they had to have all of their "stuff" out of the Hudson Street office by 9 am tomorrow (Wednesday, the 19th).

The volunteers were not given an office to relocate to, just evicted, literally thrown out on the street.  Personnel records, Volunteer Association records dating back to 1920, you name it - it was "get them out, or lose them."  Might I mention this also included the office furniture, phones etc.?

Is this how we treat the volunteers in the United States of America??

Is this, by any stretch of the imagination, how New York is treating it's
volunteers that are helping with the disaster there?

Arlington seems to have forgotten that the strength of America is built on volunteerism.  The giving of yourself to others is the greatest gift we as humans can give.  Without volunteers at the Red Cross, the hospitals, the fire departments, where would we be?  Where is the respect?  Where is the appreciation?  Are these individuals not important???  Expendable?  Is Arlington trying to crush volunteerism?  What is happening in this city?  And yet, here you have 2 of Arlington's volunteers that are Virginia Valor Award
members and this dedicated group of citizens is being treated like this?
Something is horribly wrong in Arlington!
