Glynis, Maggie, T_Storm, and TLC View From A Window Challenge Springtime
The image above is what you will be making. It's reduced in size. This tutorial is a team collaboration. You will need PSP7 and the Simple Filters and the two images below. Right Click and save both to your hard drive.
Open both images in PSP and minimize the Mask image for now. Shift D to duplicate Springtime. Resize to 300 x 200 making sure the Maintain Aspect Ratio box is UNChecked. Now go to Effects, Sharpen, Unsharp Mask, Radius 1.03, Strength 10, Clipping 5. Shift D to duplicate and minimize.
Save your work often!
With the first copy active, go to Mask, New, From Image and select Frame Mask. Check Invert Data Box. Then Mask, Delete. Select your Magic Wand tool, Match Mode set to Opacity, Tolerance 100, Feather 0 and holding down the Shift Key select the transparent areas. Selections, Invert. You will now have "marching ants" around your image as shown:
Go to Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel, Selections shown:
Selections, None. Open a new image 350 x 250 and floodfill with a light color selected from your image. Activate your framed image, Edit, Copy, Click on your floodfilled image, Edit, Paste as a New Layer. Layers, Merge Visible.
Close out your first framed image and the mask image as they are no longer needed. When asked to save, click No. Minimize your Floodfilled image for now and activate the duplicate of the original. Select your Freehand Tool Feather 3, Antialias Checked and make a selection from the flowers at the bottom of the image. Edit, Copy, Edit, Paste as a New Image.
Open a new image, 200 x 200, Foreground Color. Set your Styles Palette to Pattern and select the flower image you just made (the first image above). Set the percentage to 100% and the Angle to 315 and floodfill your image (second image above).
Now go to Effects, Plugins, Simple and 4 Way Average, repeat using Blintz, then Diamonds, and finally Quick Tile. This is similar to what you will get:
Minimize your background image for now.
Activate your framed image, select your Magic Wand, Match Mode RGB, Tolerance and Feather 0, select the outer border of your frame. Add a new layer and setting your pattern to the background you just made, Scaled at 35%, Angle at 315, floodfill the outer border. Selections, Invert. Effects 3D Effects, Drop Shadow. Set the V and H at 2, Opacity: 50, Blur: 6.5, Color: #22213E. Repeat, changing the V and H to -2. Lower the Opacity of this layer to 70%. Keep selected and Layers, Merge Visible.
Add a layer. Set your foreground color to 404040 and close out your background color. Select your Draw Tool, Single Line, Width 1, Antialias checked. Make sure your Rulers are on (View, Rulers). Turn off your framed image and making sure you are on Layer 1, draw lines at these coordinates: start 139,25 finish 177,75 Watch the lower left corner of your screen:
Then to clean up any strays you might have made, Selections, Invert, then hit your Delete Key. Selections, None. Layer Duplicate, Image Flip. Make sure your Framed Layer is still turned off then merge the two line layers Visible. Layer, Duplicate, Image, Mirror. Layers, Merge Visible.
Selections, Select All, Float. Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel, Round Preset. Effects, Sharpen, Unsharp Mask Radius: 1.17, Strength: 46, Clipping: 2 (Note from TLC: While I was changing the strength number I noticed the twisted bar effect. I played around with the Strength and Clipping settings and used Strength: 500, Clipping: 0 and applied twice) Open viewing on your Frame Layer and check to see if your bars go to the edge of the frame. If not, use your deformation tool to pull them into place, then Effects, Sharpen, Unsharp Mask Radius: 1.03, Strength: 2, Clipping: 1.03 (Always Unsharp Mask after using the deformation tool)
Turn off viewing of your bar layer, take your Magic Wand tool, Match Mode RGB, Tolerance 5, Feather 0 and holding down the shift key, select the solid colors inside the frames. Selections, Modify, Expand 1. Delete.
Staying on your Frame layer, take your selection tool, same settings as before, and make a selection of the entire framed image. Add a layer, then Effects, 3D effects, Cutout. V and H: 70, Opacity: 60, Blur: 35.5, Color: #D7D1F3. Add a layer and repeat changing the V and H to -70. Close off all layers except the two Cutout layers. Making sure one of the Cutout layers is active, Merge Visible and Layers, Arrange, Send to Bottom. Adjust the Opacity to 30. Layers, Merge Visible.
Change your Foreground Styles Palette back to colors and use the color you selected earlier or another complimentary shade. I used #9E72A3. Go to Images, Canvas Size, Width: 370, Height: 250, Center Horizontally and Vertically Checked. Take your Magic Wand, Match Mode: RGB, Tolerance and Feather: 0 and holding down the shift key, select both borders of your image. Floodfill then Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel as shown:
Selections, Select None. Zoom in and take your selection tool and make a small selection of your border, then Edit, Copy, Edit, Paste as a New Selection. Move in place at the top of your border, then repeat and place at the bottom. Repeat making the selection, and moving into place on the right side border.
Image Resize, 350 x 250, making sure Maintain Aspect Ratio box is UNChecked.
Change your Foreground Styles Palette back to Pattern and select the background pattern you made earlier. 100%, Angle: 45. (Tip: when you want to use a pattern at an angle, to make it seamless rotate your pattern by the degrees you want to use, making sure All Layers is checked. This will give you the size you need to make a seamless pattern. You can resize it after floodfilling)
Open a new image, 1024 x 283 (the height from rotating the 200 x 200 pattern image 45 degrees) and floodfill with your pattern. Then Effects, Plugins, Simple, Quick Tile. Resize your background to 1024 x 245.
Activate your framed image and Edit, Copy, click on your background to make it active, Edit, Paste as a New Layer. Move it into place on the left side, zooming in if needed to make sure the top, side, and bottom have none of the background showing. Now go to Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow, V: 0, H: 3, Opacity: 45, Blur: 6.5, Color: #231426 or a darker shade of the color you used for the border. Layers, Merge All Flatten. Save as a .jpg image. Alternatively you can save the background pattern square, and the framed image (after adding a layer and floodfilling with your background pattern and moving it to the bottom) separately and use as a left or right side scroll stationery.
We hope you enjoy doing this tutorial. Maggie did the framed image, T_Storm did the beautiful background, Glynis added the background to the framed image and added the bars to the window. I added the drop shadows, cutout effects, borders and pulled all their wonderful work together. Be sure and check out all the other Team tutorials on the Team Spirit Tutorials website.
