Making a Birthday Invitation
This tutorial was made using PSP 7.0, download a 30 day free trial
here. This tutorial was designed by Team 5: Glynis, Steve and
Laurel as part of the
Tutorials Made Easy Group.
For this tute you will need a balloon tube. You can download it and a
few other party tubes Here.
1. Open a new image 8.5" wide x 11" high, transparent background and SAVE AS Invitation.psp. Make sure to choose inches before entering the desired dimensions.
Go to FILE> PREFERENCES> GENERAL PROGRAM PREFERENCES in the window that appears to choose RULERS AND UNITS change the ruler display units to inches. Go to VIEW and check Rulers (CTRL+ALT+R) and Guides.
Click on top ruler and drag horizontal guides down to .5", 3.75", 5.5", 7.5" and 8.5".
Next drag vertical guides out from the side to .25" and 7".
2. Add a new layer, name it background, floodfill with white. Then add a new layer, name it top balloon. Then click on picture tube tool, locate the red balloon, change scale to 60% and place on page.
Using the mover tool and the guides position the balloon on the vertical guide with the top touching
the horizontal line. (I used the knot in the bow to line up all my balloons)
3. Go to COLORS>COLORIZE> and change the Hue and Saturation. Experiment.
(I changed the Hue to 35 and Saturation to 200) click OK. Go to EFFECTS>SHARPEN>sharpen.
4. Add a new layer, name it center balloon. Select the balloon tube and change the scale to 45% and place. Go to IMAGE>flip> (CTRL+I) Select the mover tool and move into position (the knot in the bow will now be at the intersection of the two guides). Go to COLORS>COLORIZE> and change the Hue to 120, click OK. Go to EFFECTS>SHARPEN>SHARPEN.
5. Add a new layer, name it bottom balloon. Select the balloon tube, change scale to 60% and place, using the mover tool to move it into position. Go to COLORS>COLORIZE and change the Hue to 197, click OK. Go to EFFECTS>SHARPEN>SHARPEN.
6a. Add a new layer, name it top text. Set foreground color to #7315A9 and background to null. To create a shaped path for the text to sit on, click on the draw tool, freehand line, anti alias and create as vector checked. Starting about 1.5" down from the top, draw a line between the vertical guides.
Note:
While the line is still selected you can alter the shape in any way by clicking on the handles.
6b. Click on the text tool and place it on the line (note how the text tool changes!) and left click. The text entry box will open, select a typeface and size (I chose Hobo, size 40) standard text, floating and antialias checked. Type in the text and click OK. Go to SELECTIONS>SELECT NONE (CTRL+D). A message will open asking if you want to continue. Click Yes.
6c. Toggle layer visibility to off on Layer 6 (unless you want your line to show).
6d. Add new layer, name it center text. Type in the text, then go to IMAGE>FLIP>MIRROR and deselect.
6e. Add a new layer, name it bottom text. Click on the text tool. In the text entry box, select standard text, then click on the right arrow next to fill, click on gradient, then click on fill to open the gradient palette. Click on the down arrow and again on the cyan-magenta-yellow gradient. Select Linear style, angle 45, and invert gradient. Click OK. Check that floating and anti alias are both checked. Type in the text and click OK. Move text into place and deselect.
7. You can now add more balloons and streamers perhaps, remembering that you will need to add a new layer each time.
8. One last thing, don't forget to turn off the background layer if you're planning to print your invitation cover on colored card stock.
9. Merge all layers and save.
Your invitation should like like the following screenshots:
shows the full page
shows the inside when folded
shows the back when folded
shows the front when folded
And this concludes the tutorial.
